Land Rover Discovery Hatchback First Look Review

Land Rover Discovery Test Drive in Bangalore

Land Rover Discovery Overview

The new Land Rover Discovery is a big deal product for the Tata-owned British SUV maker. The New York Auto Show saw the unveiling of the Discovery Vision Concept. What followed, as a production model soon after, was the Discovery Sport that replaced the Freelander2. But what many people missed was that the concept shown then was really the design study for the next generation Discovery or as Land Rover calls it – the Discovery 5. It is the most technologically and dynamically capable Discovery – since the brand debuted way back in 1989. And even though it goes by the 5 in its name its really the 3rd generation.

A premium workhorse, the Discovery is positioned very clearly as a family car by Land Rover. The new car is also just that, albeit in a plush and luxurious package. The focus of the Discovery is to provide a powerful, efficient car with a flexible and roomy interior – that’s also loaded with tech. If you are looking for sheer performance, then this isn’t the car for you, and you’re better off staying in Range Rover Sport territory in that case. The Discovery is for those who want to move themselves and their loved ones around, in comfort and style. But in India, it will no doubt still be presented to us as luxury vehicle, which is sad really, since that is not what the Discovery is meant to be!

Land Rover Discovery Appearance

The new Land Rover Discovery exterior, as mentioned before has a new futuristic look to it and as soon as you look at closely you get know that it’s a proper upgrade to the outgoing Discovery. The new LED headlamps look really futuristic and Range Rover like although it carries that sleek look with a blockydesigned back with new LED tail lamps. The glass roof adds to the attitude in its looks with new 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels. The size of the wheels depends on which variant one goes for.

Land Rover Discovery Comfort

The Land Rover Discovery interiors make you feel bright and airy, and the materials used are probably best in class. There is a lot to like about the interiors of this car as it comes with plenty of cool features, like there are plenty of storage spaces with large door bins that easily fit in a normal 1.5 L bottle. The central space is quite deep and can be refrigerated if one goes for the upper variants.

There are five Land Rover Discovery variants: S, SE, HSE, HSE Luxury and First Edition, where S is the most basic one, and HSE Luxury and First Edition are the top ones. A lot of features may differ depending on the variant. Land Rover Discovery colours are available in Solid, Metallic and Premium Metallic colours, with a total of 17 colour options and an option to have black alloys. Also, not to miss is the 14- speaker Meridian surround sound system, which is available inthe HSE and the First Edition variants.Check for Land Rover Discovery price in Hyderabad at Autozhop.

Land Rover Discovery Engine

The Land Rover Discovery price in India starts from Rs. 68.05 (Ex-showroom, New Delhi) and goes up to more than Rs. 1 Crore if you go for the top-end variant. The new Discovery comes with 2 engine options: 3.0 L turbocharged diesel and 3.0 L supercharged petrol both mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox and being 6- cylinder engines. The Land Rover Discovery specifications for the engine are, 190 bhp of power and 600 nm of torque for the diesel engine, while the petrol engine is sportier, producing 250 bhp of power and 450 Nm of torque. You also get the terrain response with lower gear ratios.

The new Land Rover Discovery mileage has gone up due to the loss of weight. The earlier Discovery used to give around 11 kmpl of mileage, while the new one gives around 13 kmpl, which is not bad at as this kind of efficiency and does justice to the Land Rover Discovery price.

Land Rover Discovery Riding

The Land Rover Discovery reviews give a good grade to the performance and handling of the car. The engine is responsive and doesn’t disappoint you when the gas pedal is grounded. The diesel version goes from 0-100 kmph in 8.1 seconds with a top speed 208 kmph and the petrol version hits the 100 kmph mark a second faster than the diesel one, with a top speed being 7 kmph faster than that of the diesel one. Also, the handling has been improved because of the weight loss; it’s not that sharp atin the corners like Audi Q7 but good enough for an SUV of this size. Also, Land Rover reckons that this Discovery goes further off-road than any other car that they’ve made before, with water wading capacity of 900 mm, Terrain Response 2 (not present in the S variant) and off-road system that can take it to places. To know more details on Land Rover Discovery check Pasear-w

Land Rover Discovery Sport Review, Features & Specifications

Land Rover Discovery Sport Overview

The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a perfect amalgamation of British luxury and off-road capabilities. It happens to be Land Rover’s most affordable SUV and is less expensive and more adventurous than its rivals. Also, the 3rd-row seat give it an edge over competition. The 4-cylinder, 2.0-L diesel engine from the Ingenium family offers an increased power output of 237 bhp, though the base model is still equipped with 134 bhp unit. The Land Rover Discovery Sports price in India has been tagged competitively, which makes it a viable option in the segment.

Land Rover Discovery Sport Look

Off the bat, you can make out a new grille and front fascia from the Land Rover Discovery Sport test mule. It’s hard to tell exactly how those elements will end up looking when the wraps are taken out, but the lighting fixture, in particular, has two horizontal LEDs sitting at the bottom. The current Discovery Sport doesn’t have those. The grille, for its part, looks more upright, but that could be the wraps playing tricks on us. Check for Car Loan Interest Rate at Fincarz.

Even the lower intakes look different, too. That could be the case, but it could also be the case of the body wrap, once again, doing its best job at misdirecting us.The SUV’s profile looks similar to the current model. That’s expected considering that we’re only dealing with an updated look here. The rear section is interesting, though, because there are no cutouts. We do see what looks to be a pair of exhaust outlets on one side, but it’s really hard to tell given the angles from which some of the photos were taken.

Our resourceful spy sleuths did tell us that the test prototype is a hybrid mode, and that would explain the lack of cutouts in the rear. How’d they figure that out, you ask? Apparently, the Discovery Sport test mule had “hybrid” written on a yellow sticker on the windshield. Go figure.

Land Rover Discovery Sport Comfort

The interior design, fit and finish everything seems to be built with longevity in mind. The car’s interior has been carried over from the diesel, except that it uses a different tachometer because this is a petrol car. The high-set seats and the low dash offer a nice view outside. We especially love how the rotary gear rises when you start the car and then there are those nice-looking air-con dials too. It comes with only a seven-seat configuration with this petrol engine.

While the third-row seats may be good only for kids, it folds flat onto the floor, offering over a 1,000 litres of luggage space. The middle row passengers get seats which are supportive and can be moved fore and aft to maximise legroom or free up knee room for the last row. Space, in general, is good while the large windows along with a panoramic glass roof allow enough light into the cabin.

Land Rover has also given the cabin lots of recesses for small items and thoughtfully equipped it with seven USB charging points, one for each occupant. What you won’t like is the infotainment system which works and feels outdated and should be out of place in a car this expensive. All this said The Discovery Sport is a comfortable SUV with great built quality As expected from a Land Rover .

Land Rover Discovery Sport Gearbox

The Discovery Sport isn’t new but it now gets a petrol engine option. The unit is from the Ingenium family – similar to what was introduced earlier in the Velar (with more power). Earlier this May, Land Rover announced the availability of this new engine in its entry-level SUV, the Discovery Sport and entry-level Range Rover brand, Evoque. It’s a 1997cc, four-cylinder unit with 237bhp of peak power and 340Nm of maximum torque. This is mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox and you also get Land Rover’s 4×4 system with pre-programmed off-road modes. For more info on Land Rover Discovery Sport check kotra

With diesel falling out of favour with the authorities due to “environmental” issues, there has been a renewed interest in petrol engines. SUVs and petrol engines have never been considered traditional partners unless when it comes to niche, specially-made performance SUVs. Nevertheless, the Discover Sport is as rugged and conventional as sports utility vehicles get. Still, Land Rover deemed it only logical to offer the petrol option considering there might be some takers.

A 2.0-litre petrol in a two-tonne SUV might sound a bit iffy but this one doesn’t disappoint. The unit may not be the smoothest-sounding engine but you will notice the relatively low levels of clatter and vibration inside the cabin almost immediately. It builds revs easily and the torque comes in early. Despite its size and weight, the Discovery Sport petrol can sprint with ease and you certainly – under most circumstances – will not miss the low-end grunt the diesel offers.

What also helps the cause immensely is the super-smooth nine-speed gearbox. More cogs mean better fuel efficiency and also the option of getting into the most appropriate slot to make the most of the engine power. The gear knob is the dial on the centre tunnel and it – as expected – rises when you switch on the vehicle. The Sport mode holds the revs longer and manages to squeeze out more power and pass it onto the wheels. Land Rover’s capable 4×4 system means there is no dearth of grip under most scenarios – from seriously bad roads to super-smooth and fast corners.

While there is enough mechanical grip (ironically, it comes with rubber called Wrangler!) but then there is no missing the fact that this a full-sized SUV. Building up speed isn’t an issue but use the power with restrain because once in a while, the inherent high centre of gravity will make its presence felt. Pitch and roll can be felt during quick lane changes or sudden steering inputs but the car handles it with grace and the Disco Sport will dance to your tunes rather obediently.

Land Rover Discovery Sport Driving

The Land Rover Discovery Sport review gives a peek into the premium SUV’s on-road performance and passenger comfort. It also delivers increased low-speed agility as well as greater steering precision and enhanced high-speed stability. The suspension is stiff, sharp undulations filter into the cabin. The low-speed ride is a bit firm, but the Disco gains composure as speeds rise. In fact, at high- speeds the handling is safe and predictable rather than sporty. On the flipside, there is a bit of body roll when cornering hard, but it’s not a major concern at any point.

Talking about its Off-road ability it comes with Land Rover’s 4×4 system with pre-programmed off-road modes that alters the Disco’s characteristics to suit a particular terrain (mud, sand, grass, gravel) mated to its 200mm ground clearance .Hence there is no dearth of grip under most scenarios – from seriously bad roads to super-smooth and fast corners.  For more offers on Land Rover Cars in Mumbai check AutoZhop

Land Rover Discovery Sport Summing Up

The Discovery Sport, though an entry-level model for Land Rover, is a fine example of how you would want a full-sized SUV to be. It’s unmistakably Land Rover in design, comes with heaps of off-road ability and offers lots of comfort with the added advantage of an extra row of seats. The petrol engine adds a dash of finesse to the overall 4×4 ruggedness. It’s relatively quieter but doesn’t bail out the driver when it comes to offering a supply of power and torque when needed. The gearbox is clever and manages to eke out the best from the engine and works well in tandem with the four-wheel drive system. Typically, ride has gotten a bit choppy and you may want to not drive it like a sedan just to keep things sane and planted inside the cabin. Land Rover claims a 0-100kph time of 7.9 seconds for this car which we have little to doubt and a 12.5kpl fuel efficiency figure under test conditions. During our test cycle, we could garner only around 10.8 on the highway and 9.9 in the city but we will update that after the standard TG fuel test cycle soon. Nevertheless, there is more to like about this motor and considering its capability, it comes across as a cleverer option too.
